Cybersecurity in Cinema: Safeguarding digital assets and data - White Paper

The internet has created an incredible platform for transactional activity but our increasing dependency upon it for all aspects of our lives creates significant volumes of data which has value for cybercriminals.

In 2023, cybercrime was estimated to have cost the global economy around $8 trillion (half the total GDP of the European Union) or to break that down a little further, $15 million per minute. Forecasts suggest that cybercrime costs will rise by 15% year on year.
Cyber attacks are incredibly disruptive for businesses causing huge operational disruption and when they occur often generate unprecedented levels of interest and demands from key stakeholders including shareholders, employees, customers, insurers, regulators and even the media.

Whilst the digital revolution has dramatically transformed the entertainment industry, including the cinema sector. Over the past two decades, traditional analog film reels have been replaced by high-quality digital files, and cinema operations now rely almost completely on integrated IT systems for ticketing, customer data management, and film distribution. However, this reliance on technology has exposed cinemas to a wide range of cybersecurity threats. As cinemas have become increasingly interconnected, they face challenges such as piracy, data breaches, ransomware attacks, and other forms of cybercrime. Ensuring cybersecurity in cinemas is critical to protect intellectual property, safeguard customer data, and maintain operational continuity.

It is therefore essential that those within the cinema industry understand what data and systems need to be protected and why, understand the risks associated with those assets and associated data, have the right people, processes and technology controls in place and ensure that a culture of security exists not just within each individual organisation but throughout the supply chain.

This report aims to explores the state of cybersecurity in cinemas, the associated risks, potential vulnerabilities, and the strategies and solutions employed to mitigate these risks.
