Accessibility in UK and USA Cinemas - White Paper

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 3RD JUNE 2026 — Cinema Technology Community (CTC), the not-for-profit independent trade organisation has released a new white paper covering insights in to accessibility in UK and USA cinemas.

Cinemas have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 (UK) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (USA) to provide reasonable adjustments and auxiliary aids for disabled audiences. The US Department of Justice’s 2016 Final Rule specifically mandates the provision of closed captioning and audio description in digital cinema.

Accessibility barriers in cinema typically arise from the audio-visual nature of the medium — notably for people with hearing loss, sight loss, neurodivergent needs, mobility impairment, and sensory sensitivities. A combination of on-screen content enhancements, personal assistive technologies, and sensory-friendly screening practices delivers a more inclusive cinema experience globally.
